Terms & Conditions

The terms on which we sell. Everything here is one of a kind, so the most important part is simple: a piece is yours when the payment goes through, and not before.

Draft for review — please have your solicitor confirm this before launch. The paragraph on VAT and the margin scheme under Prices must also be confirmed by your accountant before this page goes live.

Who you are buying from

These terms apply to every sale made through this site. The seller is Trove. You can reach us at [email protected]. Our full registered details are to be confirmed and will be published here before launch.

Every piece is one of a kind

We sell single, pre-owned items. There is one of each, and once it is sold it is gone. Sold listings stay online, clearly marked as sold, as a record of what has passed through us — a sold listing is a record, not an offer, and cannot be bought.

Your bag does not reserve anything

Adding a piece to your bag does not hold it, reserve it or take it off sale. Until payment is confirmed, anyone else can buy it, and whoever completes checkout first gets it. If that happens while a piece is sitting in your bag, we are sorry, but the sale stands.

When you go through to payment we do hold the piece for you for 30 minutes while you are on the payment page. If the payment is not completed in that time, the hold is released automatically and the piece goes back on sale.

When a contract is made

A listing is an invitation to buy, not an offer. Your order is an offer to buy the piece. We accept that offer, and a contract is made between us, only when payment is confirmed and we send you an order confirmation email. An acknowledgement from the payment page is not our acceptance.

If we cannot accept your order

Occasionally we may not be able to accept an order — two people reach checkout at the same moment, a piece is found to be misdescribed, or the price shown was obviously wrong. If that happens we will tell you promptly and refund you in full. No contract will have been made.

Prices

Prices are in pounds sterling and include delivery within the United Kingdom, so there is no separate postage line at checkout. The price shown when you order is the price you pay.

Prices include any applicable VAT. Most of our stock is second-hand and may be sold under the VAT margin scheme, under which VAT is accounted for on our margin rather than on the full selling price, and a VAT invoice showing VAT charged separately cannot be issued for those items. If you need a VAT invoice, ask us before ordering and we will tell you what we can issue for that particular piece.

Descriptions and photographs

Every listing describes the actual piece, and the photographs are of that piece and not a stock image. Condition grades and what our specialists check are explained on the authenticity and grading page.

Colours vary between screens, and weights and measurements of antique and handmade items are as accurate as we can make them rather than exact. If a piece is not as described when it arrives, that is a separate matter from changing your mind and is covered by your statutory rights.

Payment, ownership and risk

Payment is taken by our payment processor, Stripe. We never see or store your card details.

Ownership of a piece passes to you when we have received payment in full. Risk — responsibility for loss or damage — passes to you when the piece is delivered into your physical possession, or when you collect it. Everything we dispatch is fully insured until then.

Delivery and returns

How we dispatch, the 14-day right to change your mind, how to return a piece and how refunds are made are all set out on the delivery and returns page, which forms part of these terms.

Part-exchange

Any valuation we give for an item you want to trade in before we have seen it is indicative only, based on the description and photographs you send us. It is confirmed once the item is with us and has been inspected. You are under no obligation at that point: if the cost to change is not right for you, we return your item at our cost.

Our liability to you

We do not exclude or limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Subject to that, we are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable at the time the contract was made, or for business losses, since we supply to consumers for private use.

Events outside our control

If something genuinely outside our control delays an order, we will contact you as soon as we can and agree a new date, or refund you if you would rather not wait.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The version on this page when you place your order is the version that applies to it.

Governing law

These terms, and any dispute arising from them or from a sale made under them, are governed by the law of England and Wales, and are subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may also bring proceedings in your own country's courts.

If anything here is unclear, ask us before you order. See also our privacy policy.
